Box Score STATESBORO, Ga.- Georgia Southern women's soccer dropped a 2-0 result to Davidson on Wednesday night in the final regular season contest of 2013. The loss, combined with a Western Carolina win against Appalachian State, eliminated the Eagles from the 2013 SoCon Tournament.
"Tonight was a tough loss," said head coach
Brian Dunleavy. "It's a disappointing way to go out, we just weren't able to find the back of the net. It's been a difficult year with injuries, but we've had players step up who had less experience, and now they have the advantage. We'll be a step ahead entering the 2014 season."
Both teams fighting to secure a spot in the SoCon tournament, the Eagles and the Wildcats came out strong. Just seven minutes into the first half, Davidson put the first point on the scoreboard with a free kick goal from 39 yards out by Zoe Hayes.
Entering the second half, the Eagles trailed the Wildcats 1-0. Both teams came into the second 45 minutes aggressively, battling for the win. GSU's offense pressed hard, recording six shots on goal compared to the Wildcats' two with 15 minutes left in regulation.
Davidson doubled their advantage in the 78th minute with a free kick from Wildcat Dani Johnson, struck past Eagle goalkeeper
Molly Williams. The goal solidified the win and earned them the No. 7 seed in the upcoming SoCon Tournament.
The Eagles finished out the season 5-11-2, and the Wildcats head into postseason play at 6-10-4.
