Witt Carlisle scores twice in the win
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Georgia Southern Men's Soccer took a 2-1 overtime win over No. 14 Furman to close league play for 2013 on Tuesday night. The Eagles inked their second league win of the season and move into fifth place in the league standings. Next up is a trip to James Madison for a non-conference game on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
"It was a massive result for our team," said Head Coach Kevin Kennedy. "We've really come into our own over these last four matches and it has gotten us a pair of SoCon wins. Tonight's match was back-and-forth and the final goal was a thing of beauty."
The Eagles earn their fourth win over Furman all-time and improve to 7-9-0 on the season and 2-4-0 in league play. Furman falls to 10-3-2 overall and 2-1-2 in the SoCon.
Witt Carlisle put the Eagles up 1-0 in the 54th minute off an assist from Reed Norton. A corner kick was partially cleared to Norton who whipped in a cross from the right side while Furman was advancing down the field. Carlisle got on the end of the cross and knocked a one-tymer into the net for his fifth goal of the season.
The Eagles held the lead until the 80th minute when Furman's Trevor Haberkorn leveled the score at 1-1. A free kick was played in by Martin Ontiveros, allowing Haberkorn to head the ball across at the near post.
GSU needed just 7:24 of overtime before Carlisle scored his second goal of the night to secure the win. Ethan LaPan was played in behind the Furman defense. The junior sent the ball back across the face of goal where Carlisle volleyed the ball right-footed into the left corner of the net for the match-winner.
Georgia Southern out-shot Furman 26-20 on the night with both teams posting eight shots on goal. Goalkeeper Neal Bates made seven saves as he solidifies his league-leading saves total.
