STATESBORO, Ga. – Eagle guard Eric Ferguson was presented with a commemorative 1,000-point basketball by Coach Charlton “C.Y.” Young and Director of Athletics Tom Kleinlein in front of family, fans, friends and Georgia Southern students prior to Monday’s game at Hanner Fieldhouse. Ferguson scored 10 points in the Continental Tire Classic in Las Vegas, Nev., with his milestone mark of 1,000 career points reached against North Florida on December 23rd.
“It was a great honor, but I really don’t worry about scoring a lot of points, I give credit to my teammates because you can’t score any points without your teammates passing you the ball,” Ferguson said. “I’m just one of the lucky ones to have this opportunity and to reach 1,000 points.”
The junior added 14 to his total, now with 1,083 career points, in the Eagles’ 70-57 win over Davidson and is 42 points away from entering Georgia Southern’s all-time top-30 scorers’ list. He racked up his 12th career double-double against North Carolina A&T earlier this month en route to becoming the 11th player in Georgia Southern history to collect 500 career rebounds. With his 1,000 points and 500 rebounds, he joins an elite list of only 10 Eagles to have tallied both significant career totals.
Ferguson averaged 16.0 points per game during the month of December including a 24-point performance in the overtime win over Georgia State in Hanner Fieldhouse with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the upset at Virginia Tech. A preseason All-Southern Conference selection, he was one of a select number of collegiate basketball players to garner an invitation to both the LeBron James Skills Academy in Las Vegas and the Kevin Durant Skills Academy in Chicago this past summer.
A native of Statesboro, Ga., Ferguson is the son of Georgia Southern alumni Stella Washington and Cal Ferguson, a two-year letterwinner for the Eagle Men’s Basketball team from 1989-91.
