Men’s Soccer Returns to Palmetto State, Facing Presbyterian on Wednesday

STATESBORO, Ga. Georgia Southern Men’s Soccer hits the halfway point of its seven-game road swing on Wednesday with a trip to face Presbyterian College. The match starts at 6 p.m. from Martin Stadium in Clinton, S.C.

The 2-6 Eagles enter the mid-week clash on a five-game skid. The Blue Hose are 1-7-0 on the year, but have lost six-straight games.

Last year the Eagles blanked the Blue Hose 3-0 at Eagle Field behind a pair of goals from Luigi Clendening and a third from Drew Ruggles. Georgia Southern’s two victories on the year came against Winthrop and Gardner-Webb in the Big South-SoCon Challenge which was hosted by Wofford.

In 2012, the Eagles are led by freshman Reed Norton and senior Joe Hughes with three goals each. Ruggles, a junior this season, has scored twice including the most-recent goal for GSU, a free kick against Wake Forest last week.

Presbyterian College earned its only win of the year by a 2-1 margin over Longwood in overtime on August 28th. PC has been shutout six times this year with their only other goal coming in a 3-1 loss to Denver on September 14th. Jonny Mercado, Ignacio Monchetti and Josh Carter have scored one goal each for the Blue Hose this year.

The all-time series is tied between the Eagles and Blue Hose, two wins each. GSU will look to buck a trend that has seen the home team win all four contests.

Georgia Southern opens October with a trip to face North Carolina in the final non-conference game of the regular season. GSU opens league play on Saturday, October 6th, traveling to Davidson.
