Steve Smith Named Assistant Coach at Clemson

STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Men's Basketball Assistant Coach Steve Smith has taken an assistant coaching position at Clemson University, as announced on Thursday by the Tigers. Smith replaces former Clemson assistant James Johnson who was named Head Coach at Virginia Tech on May 1, 2012.
"Steve Smith will always be a part of the basketball family here at Georgia Southern, and he is a dear friend of mine," said Head Coach Charlton "C.Y." Young. "Congratulations to Steve and his family on making this move. I also want to congratulate Clemson, because they are getting someone who I believe to be one of the Top-5 young assistant coaches in the country. He is going to be able to make a mark on the Tigers immediately with every aspect of their program and help them compete for an ACC Championship."
Smith, a South Carolina native, has been a part of Coach Young's staff for the last three years. He has been described as one of the top young assistants in the country for a number of years and joined the Eagle program after seven seasons at USC Upstate. Under Smith's tutelage, the 2011-12 Eagles performed one of the greatest turnarounds in Southern Conference history, finishing with the league's second-best record at 12-6 with a 15-15 overall record.
