STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Softball plays host to College of Charleston this weekend in a three-game series which begins on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. from Eagle Field. The Eagles lead the Southern Conference with a 11-1 league record and wins in their last four conference games. Charleston is 11-4 in league play to rank third in the conference behind second-place Chattanooga. After Saturday's doubleheader, Georgia Southern concludes the series with a 1 p.m. finale on Sunday.
Last weekend the Eagles took a three-game sweep over UNCG in Greensboro. In Saturday's weekend finale, the Eagles took a 10-2 victory in six innings. Junior Tabby Douberley (Clyo, Ga.) hit a pair of home runs in the series. In Friday's second game the Eagles scored six runs in the third inning, matching the most runs in a single inning this year for the Eagles.
On Tuesday afternoon Georgia Southern made the trek to Atlanta, dropping both games of the afternoon doubleheader. In the opener Sarah Purvis (Warner Robins, Ga.) tossed a two-hitter against the Yellow Jackets, but a Georgia Tech run in the first inning was the difference in the 1-0 decision. In the second game Georgia Tech took advantage of miscues by the Eagles to score four runs in the sixth inning and a 5-1 final score.
Purvis anchors the Eagle pitching staff with a 13-8 record including a win in all six of her league starts. She has fanned 161 batters and is holding opposing batters to a .177 average. Freshman Brooke Red (Warner Robins, Ga.) picked up her ninth win of the season against no losses. She has a 1.52 ERA in 69.0 innings and has allowed just 48 hits this season.
Marie Fogle (Rincon, Ga.) is batting .529 in conference play with two home runs, two triples and two doubles to post a .882 slugging percentage. Fogle has been moving up the career charts at Georgia Southern and ranks third in career batting average (.347) and first in career slugging percentage (.552). Mackenzie Williams (Baxley, Ga.) leads the Eagles with seven home runs and 28 RBI to go with a .309 average.
Charleston pitcher Hope Klicker tossed a perfect game on Tuesday afternoon against South Carolina State. She is 11-6 this year with a 1.73 ERA in 97.0 innings of work. Junior Stephanie Saylors has allowed just four runs in her last 56.0 innings of work for a league-best ERA of 1.39 ERA and a 16-6 record. Four Cougar batters are hitting over .300 this season led by Kelsey Hodgson's .331 mark with eight home runs.
Sunday's game is the Eagles' annual Breast Cancer Awareness game and Georgia Southern will wear special pink jerseys for the contest. The shirts can be purchased at Saturday's games for $15 each. All proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.
The Eagles close out a five-game homestand on Wednesday afternoon against North Florida. Georgia Southern dropped their previous meeting against North Florida 4-1 on February 26th. The afternoon doubleheader starts at 3 p.m. from Eagle Field.
