Garrido named SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern sophomore Paola Garrido (Vigo, Spain) has been named the Southern Conference's Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of February 29 – March 7. The tennis phenom adds the title to her list of accolades on the season, as she was also named the Southern Conference's Women's Tennis Player of the Week on February 14.

Garrido accomplished a rarity in collegiate tennis on Friday when she won three matches in one day due to rescheduling caused by rain. She disposed of Western Carolina's Ainhoa Iglesias Diaz by a 6-1, 6-0 score and Florida A&M's Kathline Durden by a 6-1, 6-1 score, both at the No. 1 singles position. Her win against Diaz clinched the match in the SoCon opener for the Eagles. She also teamed with Mimi Bollaci (Atlanta, Ga.) to defeat Florida A&M in doubles play at the No. 2 position, 8-2. Garrido was 2-1 for the week in singles play and 1-1 in doubles, marking only the second and third losses she's suffered in her 15 matches this season. Both of her singles losses have been in third-set match tiebreakers.

Garrido's accomplishments on the court also carry over to the classroom, where she sports a hefty 3.95 GPA while majoring in Pre-Business.
