LAS VEGAS, Nev. – An unbelievable shooting exhibition by North Florida handed Georgia Southern Men’s Basketball a loss in its final game of the 2012 Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic. The Ospreys shot .536 from the field and .500 from downtown to hand the Eagles a 74-46 defeat inside the Orleans Arena. GSU took quality shots in the contest, but only managed a .315 field goal shooting mark.
“We’re going to have to learn how to raise our level of play when the ball isn’t finding the basket,” said Head Coach Charlton “C.Y.” Young. “North Florida made some shots, made some adjustments, but our problem tonight was not making shots. It was very similar to our game against Virginia Tech when we were making shots and they didn’t have an answer to it.”
Eric Ferguson reached the 1,000 point plateau with 18:11 left in the second half as the junior posted his sixth point of the afternoon. He became the 39th member of the 1,000 point club at Georgia Southern with 10 total points in the game with a pair of steals and a block.
North Florida was led by 25 points from Parker Smith on 7-of-11 shooting from downtown. Travis Wallace scored 20 points as the Ospreys shot 50% from the bonusphere in the contest.
Tre Bussey played over 35 minutes for the second-straight night with 12 points. C.J. Reed had a late drive to score nine points with three rebounds.
At the halftime break, North Florida was ahead 33-19, but the Ospreys went on a 24-11 run to open the second half and lead by 30 points with 10 minutes remaining. The Eagles went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead back to 26 points from a high of 36 inside of seven minutes to play.
After a break for Christmas, Georgia Southern will host in-state rival Georgia State at Hanner Fieldhouse. The contest on December 29th starts at 3 p.m. To purchase your tickets for that rivalry game, call 1-800-GSU-WINS or visit GSEagles.com.
