Men’s Basketball Visits Virginia Tech for Saturday Matinee

STATESBORO, GA. – Georgia Southern Men’s Basketball opens a run of four-straight games in the 2012 Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic with a trip to Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles’ trip to Blacksburg is the first game for GSU in the Commonwealth of Virginia since a 91-84 win over VMI on January 11th, 2003. Saturday’s game can be seen exclusively on WatchESPN.com.
Southern enters the contest with a 3-5 record this year including a number of close calls at Maryland and Charlotte. Virginia Tech is a week removed from its first loss of the year at West Virginia and holds an 8-1 mark. The Hokies in their first season under James Johnson knocked off No. 15 Oklahoma State on December 1st.
Eric Ferguson is the top scorer this year for the Eagles with 15.4 points per game and 7.8 rebounds per contest. The junior needs just 42 points to become the 39th member of the 1,000 point club at Georgia Southern.
Junior Tre Bussey has scored 10.4 points per game this season and dropped 14 against Brewton-Parker last week. Senior C.J. Reed and Freshman Cleon Roberts are both shooting .500 from beyond the arc this year to lead the Southern Conference in perimeter shooting percentage. Reed has 9.8 points per game from the point guard spot while Roberts has 9.1 points per game from the two-guard slot.
Erick Green is the top-scorer for Virginia Tech with 24.4 points per game in the season’s first nine games. As a squad, Virginia Tech is averaging 82.2 points per game while holding opponents to 69.1 points per night. VT has two other players averaging in double figures with Jarrell Eddie and Robert Brown averaging 14.8 and 13.2 points per game, respectively.
