Women’s Soccer Battles for SoCon Title This Weekend

STATESBORO, GA. Georgia Southern Women’s Soccer continues its 2012 season this weekend in the final two rounds of the SoCon Tournament. The eighth-seeded Eagles ousted No. 1 seed UNCG last Sunday, but needs a pair of wins this weekend to claim the program’s first SoCon Championship. The Eagles face fifth-seeded Elon in the first of two semifinals at 6 p.m. (ET) at Samford’s Track & Soccer Stadium in Birmingham, Ala.

Fans can watch the Eagles’ quest for the league championship live on SoConSports.com. Sunday’s Championship Final will be broadcast on ESPN3.com.

GSU’s tournament run continues thanks to a 89th minute goal from freshman Nora El-Shami. The freshman scored her fifth goal of the year and was named to the SoCon All-Freshman team earlier this year. El-Shami was also picked to the CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Performers of the Week (http://bit.ly/Pmpwwj).

Senior defender Zoe Van Gorder earned GSU’s first All-SoCon nod since the 2008 season when she was picked to the league’s First Team on Tuesday. Van Gorder along with fellow seniors Carlee Storey, Morgan Springer and Courtney Collins enter the semifinals for the second-straight season.

The Eagles fell 1-0 to Elon on October 12th in the regular season fixture. A 25th minute goal from Chelsey Stark gave the Phoenix their fifth win of the season at that point. Carlee Storey took three shots on the day for GSU while El-Shami added two more in the contest as the Eagles ruled the run of play, but dropped the final result, 1-0.

The winner of Friday’s game advances to the SoCon Championship Final which starts on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. (CT) from Birmingham against either College of Charleston or Furman. That game can be seen live on ESPN3.com
