BY THE NUMBERS - PACK THE HOUSE IN PINK EDITION
STATESBORO, Ga. - "By the Numbers" is dedicated this week as a tribute to all individuals who have lost the battle with breast cancer, those who are currently battling breast cancer, and those who have conquered breast cancer. This Saturday, the seventh annual "Pack the House in Pink" event, in conjunction with the Eagle Basketball games, will raise awareness and funds for the fight against cancer and for live-saving research.
3: Every three minutes, someone, either a woman or a man, is diagnosed with breast cancer. Incidences of breast cancer have increased from 1 in 20 women in 1960 to 1 in 8 women now. A man's lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000.
4-13-2012: In addition to raising awareness for breast cancer this weekend with "Pack the House in Pink," Eagle student-athletes will participate in the Statesboro and Bulloch County community' Relay for Life event to support the fight against all cancers. This year's event is Friday, April 13th, at the Kiwanis Fairgrounds.
13: Breast cancer claims a life every 13 minutes.
40: Doctors recommend that all women should have an annual screening mammogram beginning at the age of 40.
75 percent: Of the funds raised by Komen Coastal Georgia, 75 percent remain in the regions, providing funding for education, screening and treatment to programs within its service areas.
85 percent: 85 percent of breast cancer diagnoses occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer. These occur due to genetic mutations that happen as a result of the aging process, and life in general, rather than inherited mutations.
98 percent: If breast cancer is found early, while confined to the breast area, there is a 98 percent five-year survival rate.
1991: The color pink has been used to represent breast cancer awareness since the mid-1980s. The ribbon was first used in the fall of 1991 when the organization Susan G. Komen for the Cure handed out pink ribbons to all breast cancer survivors and participants in the Komen New York City Race for the Cure.
226,000: An estimated 226,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012.
2,500,000: In the U.S., there are currently more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors. This number continues to increase, because death rates from breast cancer are decreasing as a result of better screening, diagnosis and treatment.
