STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Men's Basketball returns to the road on Saturday night with a trip to Wofford to open a tour of South Carolina's Upstate. The Eagles improved to 4-1 in league play with a 58-53 win over Samford. Elsewhere in the league, Charleston fell to UNCG at home, leaving the Eagles in sole possession of second place in the SoCon South Division. Wofford enters Saturday's game, which beings at 7 p.m., at 9-8 overall and 2-2 in the Southern Conference.
Jelani Hewitt (Miramar, Fla.) scored 13 points in the victory over Samford, including four points in the final minute that put the game on ice. Eric Ferguson (Statesboro, Ga.) logged his third double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds against the Bulldogs.
Last season, senior Ben Drayton III (St. Marys, Ga.) scored 31 points in the Eagles' trip to Wofford as Georgia Southern fell to the Terriers, 69-61 at Johnson Arena. The Terriers went on to win their second consecutive SoCon Tournament Championship, but are without the services of five seniors from that squad.
Wofford is coming off a hard-fought 51-48 road loss to Chattanooga on Thursday night. Kevin Giltner leads the teams with 15.0 points per game, followed closely by Brad Loesing's 14.2 points per game. The Terriers were picked to finish fifth in the South Division by the league's coaches. Head Coach Mike Young is in his 10th season at Wofford and has a 146-146 career record.
The road swing continues on Thursday night, January 19th at Furman. All Georgia Southern Men's Basketball games can be heard on The Boomer 103.7-FM and online at GeorgiaSouthernEagles.com
