STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern record holder Marlo Mincey has been named head coach of the Eagle Cross Country and Track and Field programs, announced today, June 22nd, by Director of Athletics Sam Baker. Mincey, an assistant coach at Georgetown University, helped guide the Hoya women's track and field program to a top-25 finish at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships, its first since 2000. The Hoya women's programs ranked ninth in the Terry Crawford Program of the Year standings, which recognizes the best combined finishes of cross country and track and field programs in an academic year.
Mincey represented the Eagles in the NCAA outdoor regionals in 2004 and held five combined University records with three outdoor and two indoor marks at the time of her graduation. She finished her competitive career at Georgia Southern with six Southern Conference titles beside her name, including performances in the 400 meter Hurdles and as a member of the Eagle 4X400 meter Relay team that set SoCon records. The 12-time All-Southern Conference honoree earned her undergraduate degree from Georgia Southern in exercise science in 2004 and continued her studies, adding a master's degree in sport management in 2007.
"Coach Mincey's experiences at Fort Valley as a head coach and now at a high-level program like Georgetown have prepared her well to be our head coach," said Georgia Southern Director of Athletics Sam Baker. "Her genuine passion for Georgia Southern came through during her interview and it was evident this was more than just a job to Marlo."
Mincey returns to her alma mater after two years at Georgetown as the assistant track and field coach for both the men's and women's teams. With responsibilities for student-athletes who competed in sprints, hurdles, jumps and relays, she helped coach the Hoyas to 20 school records, including Georgetown's first-ever NCAA qualifying team in the women's 4X100 meter Relay. The 4X100 outdoor relay team in 2010 earned its first-ever appearance in the national championship meet and parlayed that opportunity into a third-place finish. The women's indoor 4X400 meter Relay team recorded the third-fastest time in the history of the Hoya program and became the first team to qualify for nationals in a decade.
The achievements of the Hoya programs during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons included the recognition of four indoor and one outdoor track and field All-Americans, 14 qualifiers for the NCAA national championships (8 indoor, 6 outdoor), 19 NCAA regional qualifiers and seven Big East event champions. Mincey coached a student-athlete on the women's side to a NCAA open qualifying time in the 400 meter Dash event, becoming only the third individual in the history of the Hoya program with that distinction. Another major accomplishment occurred when one of Mincey's sprinters on the men's team not only set a Georgetown record in the 500 meter Dash, but he also set the national record for his native Great Britain.
Prior to joining the Hoyas program in August of 2009, Mincey served as the head coach for Fort Valley State's men's and women's cross country and track and field programs. Twenty-two student-athletes qualified for nationals with Wildcats winning national championships in the Men's 200 meter Dash and the Women's Triple Jump.
Under her guidance, her student-athletes at Fort Valley State claimed 19 All-America honors and two regional athlete of the year accolades to go along with 29 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference crowns (SIAC). In those two years at FVSU, the Wildcats also broke 14 school records. Mincey was selected as the SIAC Coach of the Year in 2009 for the achievements of her teams.
The Hazlehurst, Ga., native taught for one year in the Health and Physical Education program at Fort Valley Sate while coaching. Mincey gained additional experience as a graduate assistant for the Georgia Southern kinesiology department and as a member of the Eagle strength and conditioning staff. Mincey also worked with the University's Upward Bound program as a resident director and was an assistant coach for the track and field program at Southeast Bulloch. She is USA Track and Field Level I certified and recently completed the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaching Association program for sprint, hurdle and relay specialist education.
