STATESBORO, Ga. - After a nationwide search, Head Coach Charlton "C.Y." Young has announced that Chris Capko will join the Georgia Southern Men's Basketball coaching staff for the 2011-12 season. Capko joins the Eagles after a two-year stint at Stetson.
"Chris is a guy I've had my eye on for a long time," said Young. "He was a great player out of high school, and I recruited him out of that powerhouse program at Kathleen High School in Lakeland, Fla. We are very excited to have him join our staff, he has a maturity and knowledge about coaching that is well beyond his years."
At Stetson, Capko served as the shooting coach and his other duties included recruiting, advance scouting, running team drills and player conditioning workouts. In the 2010-11 season, Stetson recorded victories over Wake Forest and Atlantic Sun Conference champion East Tennessee State.
Capko joined the Hatters from Marshall University, where he was a graduate assistant under Thundering Herd Head Coach Donnie Jones. At Marshall he was responsible for assisting in the day-to-day operations of the program, monitoring the academic progress of the players, weight training and conditioning, film exchange and assisting with the recruiting process.
As a student-athlete, Capko spent his freshman year at the University of Florida and after one season with the Gators, Capko transferred to South Florida where he played three seasons for the Bulls. As a junior he was fifth in the Big East in assists and was selected team captain as a senior.
Capko earned Academic All-Big East honors as a junior and senior at USF and was nominated for Big East Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year in 2007. Capko earned a bachelor's degree in Mass Communications at USF in December 2006 and a Master's in Adult and Technical Education from Marshall in 2009.
A native of Lakeland, Fla., Capko was a starter for Kathleen High School when the Red Devils won the 2001 FHSAA 4-A State Championship.
