Pinch-Hit Double Puts Baseball on Wrong Side of a One-Run Game

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston (16-9, 3-2) evened the series with Georgia Southern (14-10, 5-3) with a 3-2 win on Saturday, March 26th at Patriots Point. A pinch-hit double by Dre Watts plated an unearned run to put the Eagles on the wrong side of the one-run ball game. Head Baseball Coach Rodney Hennon will have to wait until tomorrow's series finale for a chance at career win number 500. The game time for Sunday, March 27th, has been moved up to 10 a.m. as rain is expected in the Charleston area later in the day.

Both Eric Phillips (Carrollton, Ga.) and Steve Cochrane (Mooresville, N.C.) kept their streaks alive with hits in the game. Phillips has hit in 17-straight games after launching a home run in the fourth inning, while Cochrane has reached base in all 24 games this season after his base hit in the sixth inning.

Josh Renfro earned his fourth win of the season after a strong seven innings of work Renfro allowed one earned run on five hits and struck out six batters. Josh Adams (Bath, S.C.) had a solid outing for the Eagles, but was tagged with his third loss of the year. Adams faced his former teammate Marty Gantt four times and did not allow a hit to him. The junior pitcher allowed two earned runs on eight hits in six innings.

Georgia Southern tied the game at 2-2 in the seventh inning, scoring an unearned run on a ground out by Shawn Payne (Stone Mountain, Ga.). Tom Richardson (Lilburn, Ga.) reached base on an error to start the inning and moved to third base after a sacrifice bunt and a single by Arthur Owens (Fayetteville, Ga.).

Charleston took advantage of two leadoff walks and an error to score its three runs. Gantt walked in the first meeting between the former teammates in the first inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Leeds. The Cougars scored the second run of the game in the fifth inning on a double by Daniel Aldrich.

Jimmy Holton, who went 1-2 with a double out of the nine spot in the order, led off the inning with a walk and reached second base after a base hit by Rob Kral. A two-out double by Aldrich plated one run, but a fly out stranded two Cougar runners in scoring position.

An error and a double in the third inning put Charleston back on top 3-2. Gantt reached second base after a throw went into the dugout for an error. The Cougars sent a pinch-hitter to the plate in Dre Watts, who promptly doubled in the run from second base. Joe Lower (West Palm Beach, Fla.) came on to pitch following the hit and recorded three-straight outs, including two strikeouts to end the inning.

Tomorrow's game with the College of Charleston has been moved up to 10 a.m. on Sunday due to impending weather.
