Georgia Southern Plays Host to Rival Mountaineers

STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Softball wraps-up a six-game homestand with a weekend series against rival Appalachian State. The Eagles (8-14) open Southern Conference play at Eagle Field for the first time since 2004. The three-game set starts with a doubleheader on Saturday (March 12th) at 1 p.m. and closes with a single game on Sunday (March 13th) at 1 p.m.
The Eagles have control of the all-time series with a 23-9 mark against the Mountaineers. The teams split the two games played last season in Boone, N.C. The loss in the series final snapped an eight-game winning streak for the Eagles. Georgia Southern swept the Mountaineers two years ago in Statesboro. Senior Brianna Streetmon (Winder, Ga.) tossed a one-hitter in the series finale.
ASU's Meghan Smith paces the Mountaineer offense with a .319 batting average entering conference play. She has four doubles and two home runs while driving in 12 runs. Three Mountaineer pitchers have ERAs under 3.00. Hannah Dow (2.22), Caitlin Wainwright (2.52) and Frannie Seader (2.93) lead the ASU pitching staff.
Freshman Shelby Morrill (Madison, Ga.) has the hot bat for the Eagles with a four-game hit streak Hitting .556 over the last four games, Morrill had two doubles, a home run and four RBI. Junior Marie Fogle (Rincon, Ga.) is the defending SoCon Player of the Week after a big weekend at the Tennessee Classic.
In the circle, Streetmon has four wins this season and has held opposing batters to a .215 average. Freshman Allie Miles (Dacula, Ga.) ranks second in the SoCon with 56 strikeouts. Senior Megen Smith (Springfield, Ga.) picked up her first win of the year in GSU's 10-1 rout of Mount St. Mary's Thursday evening.
