STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Men's Tennis team (3-2) travels south to Jacksonville to face the North Florida Ospreys (3-2) Saturday, February 19th at 2 p.m. The Eagles will play Mercer on the road next Saturday, February 26th on the road before returning home to Hanner Tennis Complex on Sunday, February 27th to face Florida A&M.
North Florida owns a 2-1 record over Georgia Southern in the last meetings with two straight wins, 4-3 in 2010 and 5-2 in 2009. The Eagles clinched a 5-2 home court victory over the Ospreys in 2008.
The Eagles plan to come out strong on Saturday in the doubles competition to set the tone for the match.
"'We've struggled a bit on the road so far this year, but I think we've learned a lot from each one of those matches," Head Coach Nick Zieziula said. "If we continue growing with each match we play, then we will be able to start putting up some wins on the road. Saturday we need to create a spark early in the doubles and then carry that momentum through the singles matches."
North Florida is 3-2 on the season with wins over Florida Atlantic, Florida A&M and Georgia State. UNF has two losses, both coming in January, to Elon and Miami, Fla.,
The Eagles are looking to come back from a 6-1 defeat they suffered against South Carolina State on Wednesday. Sophomore Juan Manuel Melian Puigventos (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) remains undefeated with a 5-0 record at number-one singles, producing a 6-2, 6-2 win over the Pirates' Gabriel Meana. Puigventos also picked up an 8-7 win with teammate Matthjis Verdam (Hilversum, The Netherlands) at the number-one doubles seed.
