Georgia Southern Closes Road Swing Against Elon

ELON, N.C. - Georgia Southern Men's Basketball closes out a two-game road swing through North Carolina's Piedmont Triad against Elon Saturday, January 22nd, at 7 p.m. GSU looks for its second consecutive win over Elon after defeating the Phoenix in Statesboro last year. The Georgia Southern Radio Network will have live coverage on 102.9 FM and GeorgiaSouthernEagles.com/Eaglevision with the pregame show starting at 6:30 p.m.
Three players are averaging double figures for Georgia Southern (4-16, 0-6 SoCon) with junior Ben Drayton III (St. Marys, Ga.) leading the way with 15.3 points per game. He scored 17 against UNC Greensboro Thursday night while freshman Eric Ferguson (Statesboro, Ga.), averaging 14.4 points per game, had a game-high 24 points against the Spartans. Senior Rory Spencer (Atlanta, Ga.) is scoring at a clip of 11.2 points per game to go along with 24 blocks. His 86 career blocks rank fourth on the GSU career list.
Saturday's game is the 14th all-time meeting between Elon and Georgia Southern. The Eagles hold an 8-5 lead in the all-time series with a win last year in Statesboro. The Eagles bested Elon last year by a 98-88 margin.
Phoenix guard Drew Spradlin scored 28 points to help Elon rally for a 77-70 win over Davidson in its last game Thursday night. The win snapped Elon's two-game losing streak following conference losses to Appalachian State and Western Carolina. Spradlin paces Elon as its leading scorer with 14.4 points per game.
Head Coach Charlton "C.Y." Young leads the Eagles in his second year in charge of his alma mater's program. Young led Georgia Southern to its last NCAA Tournament appearance and ranks as one of the all-time leading scorers for the Eagles. Matt Matheny leads the Phoenix in his second year as head coach at Elon. He holds an 18-33 overall record and is 6-2 this season at Alumni Gym.
Georgia Southern returns home for two games at Hanner Fieldhouse, first with a 7 p.m. game against College of Charleston on Wednesday, January 26th, and a Monday, January 31st game versus Davidson.
