STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Cross Country team will bring seven runners to compete at the Clemson Invitational on Friday, September 17th. The Tigers play host to their first home meet in four years with the Eagles participating in the race for the first time since 2004. Nine women's teams will begin the 5K race at 6:15 p.m. at Musser Farms Research Center, Clemson's 240-acre fruit tree research farm located near campus.
"We are looking forward to running on Clemson's new course and believe we will see a lot of progression from our team this week as we are coming out of our best week of training collectively so far this season," said Eagles Head Coach Natalie Smith. "Our two captains, senior Kassi Lee (Elberton, Ga.) and junior Brittani Martin (Alpharetta, Ga.), have really stepped up in leading this team. Sophomore Sara Curry (Lawrenceville, Ga.) is coming off of her best collegiate time and I believe she is going to set the stage for our top five to have a much better gap time this week. Also look for sophomore Heather McAllister (Cartersville, Ga.) and freshman Amanda Ventre (Acworth, Ga.) as they begin to really tighten up and run with our top three."
Curry, Lee, Martin, Asea Mayfield (Marietta, Ga.), McAllister, Talisha Rice (Stockbridge, Ga.) and Ventre will represent the Eagles at Friday's meet.
In the 2010 season-opening meet at the Gamecock Invitational two weeks ago, Curry posted a career-best time of 19:25.31 in the 5K, good for a Georgia Southern all-time top-10 finish. Curry had the top individual finish at 17th with four Eagles placing in the top 40. Several of the same teams traveling to this weekend's Clemson Invitational competed at the Gamecock Invitational with Clemson winning the overall team event.
