Payne, Moye Called in MLB Draft

STATESBORO, Ga. – Outfielder Shawn Payne and pitcher Andy Moye became the second and third Georgia Southern Eagles selected in the 2010 Major League Baseball draft on Wednesday afternoon. The Kansas City Royals picked Payne in the 44th round (1319th overall), while the St. Louis Cardinals called Moye in the 50th round (1519th overall).
Payne finished the 2010 season with a team-leading 43 stolen bases. The Stone Mountain, Ga., native ranked as high as eighth in the nation in stolen bases. He went a perfect 38-of-38 in stolen base attempts before being caught in mid-May at Davidson.
Payne scored 68 runs and hit .345 in his first season as an Eagle after transferring from Middle Georgia College. He capped the season driving in 33 runs on 71 hits and set a personal-best hit streak of 10 games. Against non-conference foe Holy Cross, Payne collected a career-high five hits. He drove in a personal-best four runs in the opening game of the Alcorn State series after launching two home runs.
He recorded five home runs, one triple and was named Second Team All-Southern Conference at the end of the season. Payne compiled a .977 fielding percentage in centerfield.
Moye was the starter of two shutouts during the 2010 season and the first since 2007. An Alpharetta, Ga., native Moye finished the season with an 8-4 record and a 5.61 ERA. He threw 77 innings in 18 total appearances, while picking up one save against Appalachian State.
Twice named the SoCon Pitcher of the Week this season, Moye received the first honor after the UNC Greensboro series where he matched his career-high of eight innings pitched and struck out a career-high 13 batters. He was the driving force behind the 12-0 shutout of the Spartans. The second shutout of the season started by Moye occurred at Elon, which marked the first shutout of the Phoenix in conference play.
Jake Brown (Forest Hill, Md.) was the first Eagle selection of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft. He was selected in the 26th round (785th overall) by the Oakland Athletics.
