Blondell Tied for Second, Eagles in Eighth After Two Rounds at Southeast Regional

ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Logan Blondell finished strong on day two of the NCAA Southeast Regional, climbing into a tie for second place individually Friday (May 21). As a team, Georgia Southern added five strokes in the second round for a combined 293, 581 two-day total, at the Capital City Golf Club's Crabapple Course, a par 70, 7,182 yard championship-style course.
Reducing its second round score by five strokes, Clemson slid past No. 1 seeded Oklahoma State and stands in first with a 561 (+1) total. The Tigers' 1-over score is three ahead of the Cowboys and a comfortable 12 shots ahead of host Georgia Tech in third. Brigham Young moved into a tie for fourth alongside South Alabama, both with 576s. The Cougars stayed steady, shaving off two strokes, while the Jaguars jumped from a T7 position into a coveted top five position, slicing its score by eight strokes.
The top five teams will advance to the NCAA Championship to be held June 1-6 at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Breaking a three-way tie for first place individually, Robbie Fillmore of BYU followed a first round 68 with a second round 69 to claim sole possession of first. Meanwhile, Blondell matched his first round 69 in the second round and currently stands in a three-way tie for second with Arkansas' Jamie Marshall and Oklahoma State's Peter Uihlein. Five players stand in a tie for fifth at even par 140.
“Again, we got three good scores today, but we didn't play our best and if we want to compete at the highest level, we need four solid scores,” said head coach Larry Mays. “We played hard and I'm proud of the team for staying strong. We got off to a rough start early today, bounced back and then got in a little trouble at the end.”
For the second straight day, GS started off slow with three Eagles making bogey on the opening hole. Blondell and Florian Sander (Bregenz, Austria) were the only two Eagles to par the hole.
Junior Blondell moved to even with a bogey on 17, but slipped back to under par finishing with a birdie on 18 for his second round of 69. Blondell remains one of only four competitors in the red with a 2-under 138. Standing only one stroke out of first, Blondell will battle for the individual advancement to the NCAA Championship with the top individual not on a qualifying team earning a spot in the prestigious tournament.
Senior Spence Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C.) was the second Eagle to match his opening round score. Fulford is 4-over for the tournament with consecutive rounds of 2-over 72s. The senior currently stands tied for 25th place.
Sander improved two strokes on his first round 75. The freshman parred the opening 10 holes to jumpstart a 3-over 73 round. Sander heads into the final round in a tie for 44th.
Matt Deal (Statesboro, Ga.) and Ryan Zabroske (Alpharetta, Ga.) rounded out the lineup for the Eagles. Deal posted a second round 79 for a 56th place tie, while Zabroske carded an 80 to claim part of 69th.
“Logan [Blondell] played a great round and Spence [Fulford] played solid,” noted Mays. “Tomorrow, we have to take care of our business and not worry about what everyone else is doing. We are in good position heading into the final round, we just need to finish strong tomorrow.”
For the final round, Georgia Southern will be paired with Arizona State and Wake Forest. Zabroske will lead the charge at 7:30 a.m. teeing off on the back nine followed by Deal, Sander, Fulford and Blondell.
