STATESBORO, GA – Renewing a rivalry absent four years, the Georgia Southern Baseball Eagles will welcome Marshall to J.I. Clements Stadium for a three-game series this weekend. First pitch on Friday, March 5 is slated for 7 p.m., while game times on Saturday and Sunday are set for 2:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
Georgia Southern (3-6) enters the contest coming off a 14-3 loss on the road at North Florida, the first road game of the season. The Eagles were led by Kyle Blackburn (Marietta, Ga.) who went 1-for-4 with a home run, collecting all three RBI in the game. Steve Cochran (Mooresville, N.C.) went 2-for-4 for the Eagles.
Marshall enters the series carrying a 4-3 record having played two Southern Conference teams already this season. The Thundering Herd opened the campaign with a four-game series at Samford before traveling to The Citadel to participate in the The Charleston Crab House Shootout. The Herd are 2-3 when facing SoCon teams and are coming off a 10-2 win over Saint Joseph's in the Charleston tournament.
Scheduled to take the mound Friday night will be left-handed pitcher Jake Brown (Forest Hill, Md.) and right-handed pitcher Ian Kadish. Brown has made two appearances this season, starting the season-opening game against Tennessee Tech.
Saturday and Sunday projected starters for the Eagles are Matt Murray (Spring City, Pa.) and either Trent Franzago (Byron, Ga.) or Chris Beck (Jefferson, Ga.). Marshall plans to throw Shane Farrell and Mike Mason, respectively, for the final two games.
The non-conference foes last played each other in 2006. The Eagles swept the Thundering Herd, 3-0, in the series contested at J.I. Clements Stadium. Before 2006, GS last played Marshall in 1997 when the Thundering Herd were still a member of the Southern Conference.
Papa John's, the title sponsor for the weekend series, will be on-site each of the three days for in-game promotions and the first 250 fans into each contest will receive a Papa John's coupon.
