GREENSBORO, N.C. - Megen Smith's (Springfield, Ga.) hit two home runs, her sixth and seventh of the 2010 season, to lead the Eagles to a 2-1 win over UNC Greensboro in the first weekend of Southern Conference softball action. Georgia Southern took two of three in the series.
The Spartans had five hits and held Georgia Southern held to only three hits, but Smith's two home runs provided enough offense to give the Eagles the win. Jenny Side had a double in the first inning to account for the Eagles other hit. GSU held the 2-0 lead until the bottom of the seventh when the Spartans' pinch hitter Katie Stripling had a single and advanced to third on Emily Akiyama's double to center, but was thrown out at the plate by Side.
With two outs, April Langley pinch hit for UNCG and reached on a fielding error, which allowed Akiyama to score. Spartan Laura Olenderski reached first and Langley moved to second, but Brittany Ausley lined out to Side to end the UNCG rally.
Junior Brianna Streetmon (Winder, Ga.) posted her eighth win and ninth complete game of the season. Streetmon allowed five hits and a walk, but struck out four and the only UNCG run was unearned.
The Eagles, (13-9, 2-1) travel to No. 11/8 Georgia Tech for a doubleheader Wednesday with games at 3 and 5 p.m.
