Softball Plays Host to Georgia State

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Softball team plays host to in-state foe Georgia State in a mid-week doubleheader on Wednesday, February 24, before heading to Ft. Myers, Fla. to take part in the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament Friday, Feb 26-Sunday, Feb. 28. Georgia Southern returns to action Wednesday against Georgia State after going 2-3 over the weekend as it hosted the 2010 Eagle Classic. Georgia Southern and Georgia State are the two oldest collegiate softball programs in the state.
The Eagles began the season with an 8-0 defeat of Oakland University, the dropped games to Binghamton, 4-6, in 10 innings and 0-10 to Lipscomb. Avenging the earlier loss in the tournament to Binghamton with a 6-4 win Saturday, Georgia Southern to advance to the championship game of the Classic. Lipscomb claimed the title ould be unable to find the same magic in the finale against Lipscomb.
Georgia State opened its 2010 season by going 4-1 in its opening week. The Panthers began the season by defeating Auburn 6-5. It carried that momentum over to the weekend defeating Temple, Eastern Illinois, and East Tennessee State. It advanced to the championship game of the Panther Invitational where it fell to Eastern Illinois 6-2.
Following its clash with Georgia State, Georgia Southern travels to Ft. Myers, Fla. for the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament. Georgia Southern begins tournament play on Friday morning at 9 a.m. against St. Francis (PA). It returns to action that afternoon for a game against Minnesota. On Saturday, the Eagles will take on Big East opponents UConn and Villanova. The Eagles wrap up weekend play with a 1 p.m. game with Eastern Michigan. The meetings between the Eagles, Eastern Michigan, Villanova, and UConn will be the first-ever for the programs.
