Eagle Men's Basketball Signs Five for 2011-2012

STATESBORO, Ga. - Men's Basketball Coach Charlton "C.Y." Young announced the signings of five student-athletes who will enroll at Georgia Southern and play for the Eagles beginning with the 2011-2012 season. Tyrone Brown, Chris Daniels, Kameron Dunnican, Jessie Pernell and Rasham Suarez comprise the latest Eagles' signing class.
"We are committed to recruiting and signing championship people who will help us win championships at 'The' Georgia Southern University," said second-year Eagles Coach Charlton Young. "The addition of these talented young men allows us to continue to build the foundation of a successful program. Our goal in recruiting was to select players who fit our system: high-energy, high-character individuals with high basketball IQs who wanted the athletic and academic experience Georgia Southern offers."
Tyrone Brown, 6-9, 215, PF, Jenkins County HS
Brown stays an Eagle after playing for Coach Mark Whitt and the Jenkins County High School Eagles for his prep career. Considered one of the best kept secrets in the Southeast, he scored a game-high 26 points against Calvary and had 22 points to lead Jenkins County past rival Savannah Christian last year. Brown played part of the past summer with the AAU Atlanta Celtics, but returned to his original team, Team Truth, for the remainder of the summer.
Chris Daniels, 6-5, 205, G/F, Columbia HS
Daniels is a strong, athletic wing from Columbia High School who plays under the tutelage of Coach Phil McCrary. He pulled down critical rebounds in the GHSA Class 3A state championship game and played on that 2010 title team with current Eagle Sam Mike. With 16 points in the AAU U16 National Qualifiers, Daniels helped his Southern Kings Red team advance to the national championship game this summer. He is also a member of the Georgia Elite 17U squad coached by Davis Maynard.
Kameron Dunnican, 6-9, 200, PF, Sumter (S.C.) HS
A two-sport athlete who also started for the Sumter High School football team at wide receiver, Dunnican is rated as one of the top power forward prospects in the nation by ESPN.com and as the top post player in South Carolina. As a junior, Dunnican averaged 11.2 points and 6.8 rebounds a game for the Gamecocks and added 3.9 blocked shots per game. Sumter posted a 21-5 record last year and Dunnican helped his team reach the third round of the 4A state playoffs with a double-double (16 points and 10 rebounds) against North Augusta. Dunnican's AAU team, the Carolina Ravens, finished second at the AAU Nationals last summer.
Jessie Pernell, 6-1, 170, CG, North Augusta (S.C.) HS
One of the most under-rated basketball prospects in South Carolina, Pernell also plays wide receiver for 2010 region champion North Augusta High School. He was selected to the 2009-10 All-Region basketball team after posting solid numbers all season for the Yellow Jackets, including a 30-point outing with four 3-pointers against Aiken last February. He was named the MVP of the Lake Marion Christmas Tournament and selected the 2009-10 North Augusta High School Offensive Player of the Year. Pernell played for the SC Ravens and for the AAU squad Team Power.
Rasham Suarez, 6-3, 180, PG, Jonesboro HS
Suarez is the son of an AAU coach and has played for two years at Jonesboro High School for Coach Dan Maehlman. A first-team Southside selection on the Atlanta Journal Constitution's All-Metro team as a senior, he earned Jonesboro H.S. Player of the Year as well as Region 4-AAAA First-Team honors. Suarez helped his AAU team Georgia Stars shine at the Nike Peach Jam in Augusta hitting game-winning free throws against Each 1 Teach 1. He played on Puerto Rico's U18 squad and was also a member of his native country's Centrobasketball 2009 17U championship team.
