STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Cross Country team stays in state this weekend for Augusta State's Jaguar Invitational on Saturday, October 9th. The Jaguar Invitational presents the Eagles an opportunity to run a 6K race in their second-straight weekend of competition. The race begins at 8:45 a.m. at the Blanchard Woods course.
"We are coming off of our best performances so far this year so I am ready to see how the ladies pan out in their first 6K," said Eagles Cross Country Coach Natalie Smith. "This will be a great weekend for us not only to race, but also add to our preparation as we take on a longer race this weekend."
Running on one of the most competitive courses in the region, the Eagles hope to decrease their 5K times during the longer race and while using the longer distance to prepare for future competitions. Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga., opened in 2007 with the inaugural Jaguar Invitational cross country race, but this will be Georgia Southern's first appearance in this meet.
Last weekend at the Charlotte Invitational, history was made as one Eagle posted a top-three time for the 5K, two Eagles had personal best times and five total had their season-best times for 2010. Sophomore Sara Curry (Lawrenceville, Ga.) posted the third-best time in Eagle Cross Country history in the 5K race last weekend at the Charlotte Invitational while Heather McAllister (Cartersville, Ga.) was the second Georgia Southern competitor to cross the finish line..
"Sara Curry and Heather McAllister will stand out for our team this week as they have the perfect combination of stamina and build for these longer races," Smith said. "This will be an interesting weekend to see where we are and give us insight on the direction these ladies need to go as we get close to transitioning into track in the next month."
Results and a post-meet story will be posted on GeorgiaSouthernEagles.com as well as on facebook.com/GSAthletics. Twitter.com/GSScores will have the Eagles finish as well as key individual finishes and information.
