Lady Eagles Hit North Carolina for Two Conference Contests

STATESBORO, GA – The Georgia Southern women's basketball team travels to North Carolina for two Southern Conference contests at Elon and UNC Greensboro, Saturday, January 23 and Monday, January 25. Tips are slated for 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.

The Lady Eagles will look to complete a regular season sweep over the Elon Phoenix and avenge an earlier regular season loss to the UNCG Spartans on this trip.

Fans can tune in to the live broadcasts from Georgia Southern Radio Network's Ryan Chambers who will call all the action for both games. The Elon match-up will be broadcasted locally on WMCD 107.3 FM and the UNC Greensboro game will return to WPMX 102.9 FM. Both games can be heard globally at www.GeorgiaSouthernEagles.com.

Georgia Southern (9-9, 4-5) is coming off a 68-50 loss to Davidson which snapped a two-game win streak. Jamie Navarro (Naples, Fla.) and Krista Tate (Atlanta, Ga.) both set career-highs in scoring, but could not lead the Lady Eagles to victory. Navarro finished with 15 points, while Tate tallied 12 points in the loss.

The senior class continues its leadership on the team as Carolyn Whitney (Duluth, Ga.) averages 11.1 points per game to lead on the offense with J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) adding 10.6 points per game. Ogburn and Jessica Geiger (Stone Mountain, Ga.) lead on the boards securing 4.9 rebounds on average.

Elon (7-11, 3-7) dropped a tight game against Wofford, falling 61-60 in overtime (January 18). Ali Ford contributed 14 points to the board as Elon picked up 27 points off the bench led by Courtney Medley with 10. Three Terriers scored in double figures for Wofford, leading the team to victory.

Ford leads the Phoenix offense picking up 15.6 points per game on average, while Urysla Cotton leads on the glass, pulling down 7.8 rebounds per game.

Earlier this season, GS took the first match-up against Elon, 70-58, and holds a 9-5 all-time series advantage when facing the Phoenix. The conference rivals, however, are tied at 3-3 when competing at Elon.

UNC Greensboro (7-11, 4-6) will play host to College of Charleston in Fleming Gym on Saturday before facing Georgia Southern on Monday. UNCG has dropped the last two contests to Appalachian State and Furman, most recently. The Paladins took a 61-46 decision in Greensboro capitalizing on 22 Furman turnovers.

Lakiah Hyson, scoring 11.7 points per game, paces the Spartans on the season in scoring with Amanda Leigh close behind adding 10.4 ppg. Hyson leads on both ends of the floor securing 4.3 rebounds per game.

A last second desperation shot from the hands of Whitney did not fall earlier in the 2009-2010 conference season as GS fell 42-45 to the Spartans in Hanner Fieldhouse (Dec. 29). The Lady Eagles and Spartans split the series in 2008-09 with each team taking their respective home court advantages. UNCG leads 9-4 when facing Georgia Southern in Greensboro, but GS holds the all-time series advantage, 17-14.
