Men's Soccer Takes on USC Upstate Wednesday

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern men's soccer team (0-5-1) heads to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on USC Upstate (1-5) in a 7 p.m. match at County University Soccer Stadium.
The Georgia Southern men's soccer team was edged by Mercer 2-1 in an overtime thriller Sunday.
The Eagles out-shot the Bears 16-14 and 8-5 in shots on goal. Witt Carlisle (Alpharetta, Ga.) led the attack with eight shots, five of which were on target. His eight shots in the game tied him for fourth in school history.
Mercer struck first with a goal in the 19th minute. Ian Cameron recorded the goal on a low shot. The Eagles' defense responded and held them scoreless for the remainder of regulation.
The offense took advantage of the opportunity and was able to tie the match in the second half. Matt Crowell (St. Augustine, Fla.) recorded his first goal of the season in the 75th minute with a blast from outside the box.
The Bears scored the game-winning goal in the 97th minute off a low shot by Cameron. Chrispine Ong'Ango delivered the assist with a through pass, setting up Cameron's shot.
The Spartans picked up their first win Wednesday in a 2-1 decision over UNC Asheville but dropped their most recent match 1-0 to High Point. USC Upstate has had all five matches this season decided by one goal.
The Spartans' offense has scored five goals on the season. Timo Foerster leads the Spartans' attack with 10 shots. Foerster has also recorded a goal and three assists. Nick Buxton is right behind Foerster with nine shots and leads the team in goals with two.
The Spartans' defense ranks third in goals allowed in the Atlantic Sun and has helped USC Upstate stay in every game.
The Eagles will open conference play Saturday at Elon.
