STATESBORO, Ga. - Head coach Natalie Smith announced the 2009 Cross Country schedule Wednesday. The Eagles will run in six regular season meets.
"I am more excited about this cross country season than I have been in the last 9 years of coaching. I believe that this is the team that will start a tradition of success on the distance side for Georgia Southern," said Smith.
The 2009 season starts with the Gamecock Invitational (Sep 4). The Eagles take a week off before heading to Elon to participate in the Elon Invitational (Sep 12). The Eagles will return to Elon, N.C. for the SoCon Championships (Oct 31). Cross Country will also participate in The Citadel's Invitational (Sep 26).
The regular season wraps up with the Charlotte Invitational (Oct 2) and the Asics Winthrop Fall Classic (Oct 17).
The Eagles will field a roster of 14 runners and return all but two from last year's squad.
"We have the largest team in Georgia Southern history and we have a group of young ladies that truly have a passion for cross country and for success."
Laura Fuller (Cartersville, Ga.) is one of three upperclassmen on the roster and the lone senior. Her top time from a year ago (19:41.83) came in the Auburn Invitational (Oct 04). Kassie Lee (Elberton, Ga.) recorded the Eagles' best time (19:49.53) at the SoCon Championships a year ago.
"I am looking for these young ladies to make huge strides this season. They are working very well together and the freshman have transitioned well going into their first collegiate experience. I am looking for great things out for this team and a I do believe that we are going to see success. Young ladies to watch: Senior Laura Fuller, Freshman Sara Curry and Sophomore Brittani Martin."
