Football Picked Fourth In Sports Media Preseason Poll

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference Sports Media tabbed Georgia Southern Football to finish fourth, according to a preseason poll released by the league office on Tuesday (July 28). The poll was released prior to the 2009 Southern Conference preseason media day teleconference.

Georgia Southern head coach Chris Hatcher and senior offensive lineman Cole Fountain (Cartersville/Woodland) represented the Eagles on the teleconference. The entire teleconference will be archived on the www.soconsports.com website.

Entering the 2009 campaign the Eagles return 38 letterwinners and 16 starters, looking to improve on last year's 6-5 record. Georgia Southern went 4-4 in the league, winning all four of its SoCon road games. Three of the four losses were by a combined four points.

Just like the coaches preseason poll, Georgia Southern received one first-place vote and totaled 275 points. Defending champion Appalachian State received 46 of the 48 first-place votes and 429 points. Elon received the other vote for first place and tallied 360 points. Wofford was picked third with 326 points followed by the Eagles.

Furman (260), Samford (194), The Citadel (165), Western Carolina (94) and Chattanooga (57) rounded out the poll.

Georgia Southern kicks off the 2009 campaign on Saturday, September 5th at Paulson Stadium against Albany (N.Y.). Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by calling 800-GSU-WINS.
