STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern softball team (25-23, 14-10) returns to the site of their 2006 SoCon Tournament Title and is set to face Furman in game one of the 2009 Tournament at Jim Frost Stadium in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Eagles earned the #4 seed in this year's tournament and will face the #5 seed Furman at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
The Eagles will face the Paladins for the fourth time in six days after taking the series from them this past weekend. Furman took game one behind a three-run third inning and held on to win 3-1. GS rebounded to take the series, winning game two 5-3 and game three 4-3.
GS holds a 2-0 record in first round tournament games against Furman, including a 4-3 win which started the 1999 SoCon Tournament Title run.
Megen Smith (Springfield, Ga.) continues to be a force in SoCon games, batting .369 with two home runs and 13 RBIs. Smith earlier in the year set the school record for saves in a season and will look to tie the career record in the tournament.
Brianna Streetmon (Winder, Ga.) will look to get her first win against Furman Wednesday after earning a tough loss in game one and a no decision in game three. Streetmon is the winningest pitcher in the league with a 14-9 record and a 2.05 ERA this season.
The winner of Wednesday's game will face the winner of Chattanooga vs Western Carolina/Elon game at 5 p.m. The loser will drop down to the loser's bracket and will face the loser of game five.
