Two Champions Sign with Georgia Southern Men?s Basketball

STATESBORO, Ga. ? Georgia Southern University Men's Basketball Coach Charlton Young announced his first two scholarship signees who will join the Eagles for the 2009-2010 season. Cameron Baskerville, a 6-7, 215-lb. forward from Marietta, Ga., and Rory Spencer, a 6-8, 210-lb. forward originally from Atlanta, signed National Letters of Intent to play basketball for Georgia Southern.
In his senior season at Whitefield Academy for Georgia Class A Coach of the Year Tyrone Johnson, Baskerville averaged 12.4 points, scoring 20 or more points six times and recording eight double-doubles. He finished with a 7.7 rebounds-per-game average, 51 total blocks and 55 steals on the year. Baskerville helped lead the Wolfpack to a 26-6 record and the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Class A state championship this past season.
Baskerville started for four years at Whitefield Academy, earning first-team all-state honors in 2008 and all-region honors in 2009. Captain of the Wolfpack squad for two years, Baskerville won the team's Most Valuable Player Award as a junior.
“We are excited to have Cameron join our program,” said Young. “His versatility is a huge commodity and he is talented enough to play power forward or small forward. I like the fact that he is a physical player who is not afraid to be aggressive on the court. He has the potential to perform at a high level at Georgia Southern and in the Southern Conference. Cameron fits our recruiting profile of a championship person.”
Spencer, a forward from Johnson County Community College, played for two-time National Junior College Coach of the Year Mike Jeffers and helped the Cavaliers capture the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) D-II championship this past March. The Cavaliers defeated two top-five teams in the tournament en route to the title.
“A tremendous combination of high energy and athleticism, Rory will also bring a level of experience to our team,” Young commented. “His strong rebounding and shot blocking skills will instantly affect our program and his abilities will allow us to show multiple defensive looks. Rory is a proven winner and a critical piece to our building a great program.”
Spencer, a second-team all-conference selection, posted a team-high 12 field goals, 12 rebounds (two occasions) and eight blocks during the 2008-2009 season, overall averaging 14.5 points and 7.1 rebounds. Spencer led the squad with 83 blocks, setting a JCCC season record and finishing 11th in the nation. In his sophomore season with JCCC, Spencer compiled 24 double-figure scoring contests, including eight with 20 or more points and eight double-double games. The Defensive Player of the Year for Frederick Douglas High School, Spencer averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks per game in his senior campaign.
Young also announced two players who committed during the early signing period last fall were released from their National Letters of Intent.
