STATESBORO, Ga. ? Weather nearly forced another cancellation, but a quick rain shower did not deter Georgia Southern Football from officially closing out spring practice Monday morning (April 6).
Early in practice the clouds rolled in and the team worked through a hard 3-5 minute rain shower. There was no lightning so the team continued practice and eventually the brief storm passed.
The team worked out in shells Monday, two days after the Blue team (comprised of mostly starters) blanked the White team 31-0 in the annual spring game.
As Hatcher noted on his philosophy that every position is open, he noted players that caught his attention this spring. Come fall drills when around 30 newcomers will join the team, Hatcher said they will get the first crack to show what they can do.
“Daniel Few had a great spring and ended up as our number one left tackle as a redshirt freshman, that's good to see. Out wide, our number one guys will be Chris Teal and Garryon Taylor at the Z position. Tyler Sumner had a great spring game and has looked good at our tight end position. Our X will be (Leander) Barney and Jonathan Bryant. Adam Urbano and Darreion Robinson will be our running backs. At quarterback Lee Chapple is still number one and Kyle Collins is number two. Billy Lowe is three and Russell Demasi had a good spring and is headed in as our fourth guy right now but things can always change.
“Defensively I thought Harland Bower had a good spring. He finally bought into moving to that defensive end position, a position we thought he ought to be playing the whole time. Markeith Wylie had a good spring at the nose tackle, however we are still trying to find some guys there that will compete like we need them to. While he was out there (linebacker) Dion Dubose had a great camp. He and (Terrione) Benefield will be battling for that position. Marc Thomas, J.B. Shippy, Calvin West and Tavaris Williams all those guys will be in the mix at the other positions. Ronnie Wiggins I thought had a good spring along with E.J. Webb. Our corners Darrel Pasco and Carson Hill really played well. Then at safety I thought right now Hudson Presume and Derek Heyden are the two guys but K.R. Snipes is battling hard along with Larry Murphy. The punters, kickers and long snapper are all the same,” said Hatcher.
