STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern softball team travels to Athens Wednesday to face #8 Georgia in a single game set for 5 p.m.
GSU is coming off a disappointing series loss to Chattanooga but kept their second place hopes alive with a 1-0 win on Sunday. Brianna Streetmon (Winder, Ga.) pitched a complete game shutout to win her 14th game of the season. The sophomore pitcher leads the Southern Confence in ERA (2.08) and wins (14).
The Eagles scored their lone run of Sunday's game in the fourth inning on Mackenzie Williams' (Baxley, Ga.) two-out base hit. “She felt good after her first at bat and came up big for us,” said Johnson. Sam Russo (Snellville, Ga.) led off the inning with a single but was retired on a fielder's choice. Amanda Glover (Evans, Ga.) walked before another fielder's choice left GSU with only one out remaining, but Williams came through with a base hit scoring Glover from second.
The Eagles lead the conference in batting (.292) and slugging (.446). Russo leads the conference in doubles and ranks sixth in slugging (.564).
The Bulldogs defeated #15 Tennessee twice on Senior Day last Saturday but dropped the series finale 6-3.
UGA ranks in the top five of the Southeastern Conference in hitting (.278) and pitching (2.68). The Bulldogs also sport one of the best defenses in the SEC and have committed only 11 errors all season. Taylor Schlopy leads the conference in slugging percentage (.820).
The match up with #8 Georgia will be the first time the Eagles have faced a ranked team since the 2006 NCAA Regional. GSU lost 11-6 in an elimination game against then #8 Georgia. The Eagles have a recent win against a ranked opponent when in 2005 they defeated #10 Florida State 1-0.
Georgia holds a 19-1 advantage in the all-time series with the Eagles. The lone win came in 2000 when GSU defeated the Dogs 1-0.
The Eagles will play their final non-conference game Wednesday at 5 p.m. inside the Georgia Softball Stadium in Athens, Ga.
