CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Errors prove costly in Saturday's doubleheader as Georgia Southern (22-21, 11-9) dropped Saturday's doubleheader to Chattanooga (25-19, 14-2).
Game One
Brianna Streetmon (Winder, Ga.) held Chattanooga hitless until the third inning, but a costly error proved critical in the Eagles' 2-1 loss in game one. Both teams recorded only three hits, and the game remained scoreless until the sixth inning.
Streetmon pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits and no earned runs.
Tiffany Baker doubled after Michelle Fuzzard was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning before Toni Hutchison walked to load the bases with no outs. Brittany Eason hit a ground ball to third, but an error by Robyne Siliga (Oceanside, Calif.) allowed two runs to score. Streetmon recorded three straight outs to prevent any further damage.
The Eagles got a run back in the top of the seventh but were unable to tie the game. Nina Iduate (Norcross, Ga.) led off the inning with a double and scored on Megen Smith's (Springfield, Ga.) two-out RBI single. Amanda Hall (Haddock, Ga.) added another base hit, but Loudermilk retired the side on Jenny Side's (Loganville, Ga.) ground out.
Sam Russo (Snellville, Ga.) got hit by a pitch to lead off the second inning and promptly stole second giving the Eagles a prime scoring opportunity, but Brooke Loudermilk stranded Russo retiring the side on two strike outs and a pop up.
The Mocs loaded the bases after two outs in the fifth inning when Lyndsey Stiles walked on a full count to load the bases, but Streetmon coaxed a ground out from Kaiti Kelley to end the inning.
Game Two
GSU lost game two 5-4 after two more unearned runs were scored.
The Eagles rallied scoring one run in the seventh inning, but the rally fell a run short. Amanda Glover (Evans, Ga.) led off the inning with a solo shot to left. Hanna Ennis (Snellville, Ga.) kept the hitting going and hit a double into the left field gap. Marie Fogle (Rincon, Ga.) added an infield single putting runners on the corners with no outs, but Iduate grounded into a fielder's choice with pinch runner Caitlin Hart (McDonough, Ga.) being thrown out at the plate. Holloway promptly recorded the final two outs preserving the win.
Kristan Glover (Evans, Ga.) pitched five innings, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits.
Chattanooga scored first adding an unearned run in the third inning. Kaiti Kelley reached on a throwing error by Glover and scored on Fuzzard's base hit to right field.
The Eagles got the run back on a sacrifice fly by Russo in the fourth inning. Iduate led off the inning with a base hit and advanced to third after Siliga reached on a throwing error by the shortstop.
The Mocs opened up a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on five hits. Stiles, Kelley and Fuzzard started the inning with three straight base hits, scoring the first run of the inning. Hutchison drove in a second run on a sacrifice fly to right. An error by the left fielder allowed another run to score before two more base hits plated Fuzzard.
Softball will look to keep their second place hopes alive Sunday in game three of the series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
