SOFTBALL FLASHBACK: GSU 2, Elon 1 (March 23, 1999)

STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern beat Elon 7-0 in the first ever meeting of the two teams in game one of the doubleheader, but game two would be a different story. Game two was a nail biting pitchers' dual that would be decided in extra innings.
The Eagles loaded the bases in three straight innings but came up empty each time. An unearned run in the first inning would be all they could muster in regulation. Elon scored an unearned in the sixth to force extra innings.
Georgia Southern broke open a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning on Beth Dance's walk-off base hit to win game two 2-1.
The Eagles out hit Elon 10-4 with Ashley Flemming going a perfect four for four in the game.
Georgia Southern scored a two-out run in the first inning. Stacie Cooper led off with a base hit but was caught stealing for the first out of the inning. Jennifer Harris reached on an error after two outs were recorded and promptly stole second to get into scoring position. Flemming plated Harris with a RBI single to left.
The Eagles threatened to score another two-out run in the second inning when they loaded the bases after Sabrina Kight walked, but Cooper hit a ground ball to short to end the inning.
Georgia Southern came right back loading the bases again with two outs in the third inning, but Jessica Vanderploeg struck out Kelly Blazi to end the inning.
The Phoenix tied the game in the sixth inning after Emily Hall scored on a throwing error. Kristen Kendrick led off with an infield base hit, reached second on an error by the shortstop and reached third on a wild pitch. Holly Briel reached on a throwing error by the pitcher allowing Hall to score. The Eagles limited the damage, turning a double play and recording a ground out to end the inning.
Blazi led off the eighth inning with an infield hit. Lacey Kammerer advanced the runner with the second infield single of the inning. Kight sacrificed the runners to second and third before Dance hit a walk-off single to center to win the game.
Georgia Southern went on to win the Southern Conference tournament and finished the season on an 11-game win streak, the longest in school history.
