STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern softball team (15-15, 5-4) returns home to face Samford (10-17, 4-8) this weekend at Eagle Field. First pitch in the series is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The Eagles had the weekend off after splitting a doubleheader with Georgia Tech (Mar. 24) earlier in the week. Robyne Siliga (Oceanside, Calif.) was honored by the Southern Conference as player of the week for her part in the 6-5 win over Georgia Tech. Siliga hit a big three-run bomb to give Georgia Southern a 6-4 lead. Megen Smith (Springfield, Ga.) held on to the lead and picked up her second win of the season.
This weekend's matchup will feature two of the league leaders in batting average. Siliga and Samford's Jessica Owens are tied for the conference lead with identical .435 batting averages. The Eagles also lead the league in batting with a .298 average which improves to .306 in league play.
Nina Iduate (Norcross, Ga.) has been stellar in SoCon play, going 10 for 19 with a pair of doubles. Iduate also had a season high four hits in the 7-3 win over Western Carolina.
The Bulldogs have already made their presence felt by knocking off Chattanooga, who started conference play with five straight wins.
Georgia Southern faced Samford last season as a part of the Magic City Classic and shut out the Bulldogs 4-0.
First pitch this weekend is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, and the final game of the series will take place on Sunday at 1 p.m.
