Protest Upheld: Samford Ties Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, GA ? The result of a conference call Monday morning (March 30) declared the Georgia Southern - Samford tennis match a tie by a match score of 3-3 decided by the Southern Conference. Head Coach Justin Miles protested the match played at Samford based on ITA guidelines. The No. 4 singles match played between Brian Dushock and Alain Garrido as declared a no contest, resulting in the match tie. Georgia Southern now stands at 5-7-1 overall on the season and 1-3-1 in SoCon action.
Georgia Southern dropped the doubles point before singles play, but took a 3-2 advantage with singles wins at the one, two and five seeds. The Eagles pulled in the lead when senior Joris De Weerdt earned a decisive 6-2, 6-4 victory over Richard Walsh, while Gregory Bekkers registered a three-set victory over Kelwin DeWet from the No. 2 seed. Bekkers rebounded from dropping the first set 2-6, to post 7-5 and 6-3 second and third sets, respectively. Georgia Southern's third and final win came at No. 5 where freshman Eagle Edio Castanhel updended Carl Abalos, 6-4, 7-6(6).
The afternoon began with the Bulldogs taking close doubles wins at courts No. 2 and 3, respectively. The senior Eagle duo of De Weerdt and Matthew Sands secured Georgia Southern's lone doubles win at the one seed with an 8-6 decision over Brian Dushock and DeWet.
Georgia Southern returns to action Saturday, April 4 welcoming The Citadel to the Hanner Tennis Complex. First serve is slated for 11 a.m. in Statesboro.
