Baseball Plays Host to Winthrop Tuesday Afternoon

STATESBORO, Ga. ? Georgia Southern Baseball continues its 12-game homestand on Tuesday afternoon (March 3), playing host to Winthrop. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at J.I. Clements Stadium. All kids 12 and under can get in for free.
Ryan Chambers will call the action on Eagle 102.9 FM and via the internet at www.GeorgiaSouthernEagles.com. The broadcast will begin 30 minutes before first pitch.
The Eagles are off to a 7-1 start following their three-game sweep of Coppin State last weekend. Georgia Southern is hitting .320 as a team with a .989 fielding percentage and 4.23 ERA. This is the first of a home-and-home series against Winthrop as Georgia Southern returns the trip to Rock Hill in two weeks.
Kevin Bowles (Statesboro/Statesboro) owns a .556 batting average and, thanks to a team-leading six walks, a .750 on-base percentage. Phillip Porter (Marietta/Sprayberry) is hitting .400 with nine RBI and eight runs scored. Griffin Benedict (Dunwoody/St. Pius) is batting .360 while Brian Pierce (Roswell/Roswell) is close behind at .350. Pierce extended his streak to 177 consecutive starts at shortstop.
Scheduled to start is freshman Matt Murray (Spring City, PA/Owen Roberts). Murray owns a 6.00 ERA in six innings, striking out four to three walks.
Winthrop (6-1) won its first six games of the year before falling to nationally-ranked Kent State last weekend. The Eagles are batting .344 with a .957 fielding percentage and 4.43 ERA. Eddie Rohan leads the hitting attack at a .480 clip with John Murrian at .458 and Kevin Nolan at a .407 clip. Murrian leads the squad hitting two home runs and has driven in 11 runs. Wade Newman is scheduled to start. In his last outing the sophomore right-hander pitched six scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out eight.
