Second Half Goals by Wofford End Eagles' Comeback

STATESBORO, Ga. - Two second half goals by Wilson Hood ended the Georgia Southern men's soccer team's (0-12-1, 0-3-0) comeback opportunity, and Wofford (7-1-3, 3-0-1) remained undefeated in SoCon play with a 4-1 decision Wednesday.
Witt Carlisle (Alpharetta, Ga.) scored the first goal of his career in the 25th minute to cut Wofford's two goal lead to one. Jon Cox (Alpharetta, Ga.) took a hard shot that rebounded off the goalkeeper to Carlisle who gracefully placed it in the back of the net.
The match opened with both teams moving the ball back and forth. Armin Kinigadner put Mike Gubosh (Evans, Ga.) to work early with a shot on goal in the first minute, but he was able to come up with the quick save.
The Eagles moved the ball into the other half and got a corner kick. Joe Madigan (Centennial, Colo.) took the kick and passed the ball to Cox. Cox positioned himself outside the right post; but was unable to get a clean look at the net, and the threat was eventually cleared by the Terriers.
A foul by the Eagles led to a nice chance for Wofford in the 11th minute. The Terriers took the free kick from just outside the box and launched a shot to the left side of the net. A sliding Wofford player just missed connecting, and the ball sailed wide.
The Terriers remained on the attack in the following minutes. Yakov Rubinchik had his shot blocked by the Georgia Southern defense in the 12th minute, leading to a corner kick. Wofford took the corner and played the ball into the box near the right post where a Georgia Southern defender committed an own goal.
The Terriers tallied a second goal in the 20th minute when Armin Kinigadner broke away from the Eagles' defense and toe poked the ball under the keeper for his first goal of the season.
GS responded and cut Wofford's two goal lead to one in the 25th minute with a goal.
The second half opened with the Terriers in control, taking three corner kicks and a shot in the first five minutes of the half. Yakov Rubinchik missed to the right of the net in the 51st minute.
Madigan took the Eagles' second corner in the 57th minute, but the Terriers got control of the ball and scored two goals in an eight minute period. Scott Redding checked into the match in the 59th minute and assisted on two Wilson Hood goals.
Georgia Southern was never able to find the magic of the 24th minute again. Ryan Mertes (Mooresville, N.C.) missed a shot to the left of the net in the 70th minute, and Cox had his shot blocked in the final minutes of the match Wednesday.
The Eagles open a three-game road swing Saturday at UNC Greensboro in a 7 p.m. match.
