Nelson's 23 Paces The Citadel over Men's Basketball

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The Citadel's Demetrius Nelson scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Bulldogs to an 84-75 win over Georgia Southern Thursday night at McAlister Field House.
The Citadel evens its record at 7-7 overall and 2-1 in the Southern Conference. Georgia Southern drops to 4-7 and 2-1.
“Obviously we didn't play as well as we needed to,” said GSU head coach Jeff Price. “We were playing a tough team that was a lot more experienced than us. We missed a lot of shots that we normally make and I thought we did a really poor job of defending the ball and defending inside. Until we get a defensive mentality, it's going to be a long road for us. We have to turn things around and start defending better.”
Nelson shot 7-for-12 from the floor and added seven rebounds. He converted 9-of-12 from the foul line.
“I thought he was huge,” said Price. “He's a good inside player. I didn't think we did a good job of guarding him one-on-one and then we had to double-team him and that opened up some shots for them on the outside and that's where you have to be able to defend one-on-one.”
The Eagles found themselves down 10 (41-31) at halftime and went five minutes without scoring midway through the second half but managed to cut the deficit to 55-50 with 8:51 to play in the game.
The Citadel answered with back-to-back 3s from Zach Urbanus and Tyrell McDowell to push the lead to 11. Georgia Southern got to within five twice in the final minute, but the Bulldogs hit 10 of their last 12 free throws to put the game out of reach.
GSU senior Julian Allen (Waterbury, Conn.) tied his career high of 12 rebounds for the second straight game and notched his third career double-double with a team-high 20 points.
“Julian always brings it,” said Price. “He's one guy who I know is going give 100% every time he steps on the floor.”
Junior Antonio Hanson (Fort Worth, Texas) tallied 17 points on four 3-pointers. Sophomore Willie Powers (Gainesville, Fla.) added 14 and tied his personal-best of six assists.
The Citadel's Bryan Streeter and Cameron Wells came off the bench to record 15 and 13 points, respectively.
Georgia Southern stays on the road to take on the College of Charleston Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. The game will be televised by CSS.
NOTES: GSU was without junior Sandy Perry (Perth Amboy, N.J.) who stayed in Statesboro to undergo tests stemming from a head injury suffered in practice Wednesday.
