Georgia Southern Hosts Samford for First Time in History

STATESBORO, GA ? After coming off an astounding win over Chattanooga, the Georgia Southern women's basketball team looks to defend its home court again when they host Samford, Monday, January 5. Game time is set for a 7 p.m. tip-off in Hanner Fieldhouse.
The Lady Eagles enter the contest 9-5, 4-1. In their last contest, the Eagles handed Chattanooga its first Southern Conference loss of the season and ended a 27-game Southern Conference win streak. The victory was the first for the Eagles over Chattanooga since January 4, 2005. Jamie Navarro (Naples, Fl.) nailed a jumper from the wing with seven seconds left to secure the Georgia Southern 66-65 win Saturday night.
Ashley Rivens (Charlotte, N.C.) led the Eagles with 17 points, hitting 7 of 10 from the floor. J'Lisia Ogburn (Dublin, Ga.) and Navarro tied for a team-high six rebounds in the game. The Eagles shot 53.2 percent from the floor, compared to the Mocs' 46.2 percent.
Ashley Melson (Newnan, Ga.) leads the Eagles in overall scoring, averaging 13.9 points per game, while Ogburn leads the team in rebounding, pulling down 5.8 boards per contest.
Samford comes into the game also with a 4-1 conference record, 9-3 overall. The Bulldogs stand in third place in the Southern Conference, just ahead of Georgia Southern, who is fourth. Samford's only conference loss comes from a 54-55 loss to Chattanooga on Dec. 1. The Bulldogs have extended two games into overtime thus far in the season when they defeated Alabama and fell to Evansville in extra minutes.
Samford last defeated College of Charleston in a 64-58 fashion (Jan. 3). Savannah Hill led all scorers with 26 points and six rebounds. The sophomore forward ranks fifth in overall scoring in the league, averaging 13.5 points per game. Individually, Hill leads the Bulldogs in scoring and rebounding, averaging 13.5 points per contest and 5.4 rebounds per game, respectively.
