STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Men's Soccer team defeated USC Upstate 2-0 Wednesday afternoon at Eagle Field.
The Eagles (2-4-0 overall) scored in the first half and put the game away with 10 minutes to go in the second half.
Sophomore Fredrik Langseth (Lorenskog, Norway), scored his first collegiate goal off of Georgia Southern's first penalty kick of the season in the 30 minute mark.
“I thought Freddy had a good game,” said head coach Kevin Kennedy.
Langseth finished the day with three shots all on goal, a goal scored and ended Georgia Southern's three game scoreless drought.
Senior Daniel Smith (Marietta, Ga.) started his fourth match of the season and scored his third goal with just 10 minutes left in the match. Smith had a breakaway opportunity and did not miss, placing the ball into the back of the net.
Junior Jon Cox (Alpharetta, Ga.) helped lead the Eagles' offensive efforts by taking five shots on the day, one of which was on goal.
Junior newcomer Chris Cantrell (Savannah, Ga.) made his second start of the season in goal for the Eagles. Cantrell made four saves in 90 minutes of work.
“Cantrell played well,” said Head Coach Kevin Kennedy. “He made two big saves for us.”
Junior newcomer Abdigani Abdulahi (Atlanta, Ga.) provided the Eagles with a shot on goal during his performance off of the bench. Sophomore David Leonard (Augusta, Ga.) had a late second half chance to score when he found a crease and broke open towards the goal, but his shot sailed high and to the left of the net.
The Eagles return to action at Eagle Field on October 4th against Elon at 2 p.m. in the first conference match of the season.
