Eagles Conclude Homestand Saturday Against Wofford

STATESBORO, Ga. ? Georgia Southern Football wraps up a four-game stretch at Paulson Stadium this Saturday (Sept. 27) playing host to Wofford. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised live on Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS).

 

Saturday's game is also part of the University's Family Weekend festivities and the game is also part of Military Appreciation Day.

 

During the Wofford game, six former student-athletes will be inducted into the Georgia Southern Athletics Department Hall of Fame. The 2008 Hall of Fame class includes: Richie Bryant (golf), Anita Buggins (women's tennis), Alexis Dankulic-Manhertz (volleyball), Tommy Peterman (baseball), Rob Stockton (football) and Charlton Young (men's basketball).

 

Every Georgia Southern Football game can be heard on the 19 station Georgia Southern Radio Network (Eagle 102.9 FM the flagship station). Chris Blair (play-by-play), Terry Harvin (color analyst) and Ryan Chambers (sidelines) will call Saturday's action.

Every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. ?Inside Georgia Southern Football with Chris Hatcher' is on the air at Locos Grill and Pub. Coach Hatcher and Chris Blair will recap the previous game and look ahead to the upcoming game against Wofford. The broadcast will be carried live on Eagle 102.9 FM and on the www.GeorgiaSouthernEagles.com website.

 

This Friday at Bishop Field House will mark another installment of the coach's luncheon, featuring Coach Hatcher. Tickets are available and can be purchased by calling Southern Boosters at (912) 478-5522. That event is also part of the Eagle Vision package.

 

The Eagles (2-2 overall) are looking to even their Southern Conference record following last week's 22-20 last second loss to Elon. Georgia Southern enters the week ranked 22nd in the FCS Coaches poll and 24th in The Sports Network poll. Wofford enters the game ranked 11th in the Coaches and 14th in The Sports Network.

 

Raja Andrews (Swainsboro/Swainsboro) set career-highs last weekend recording nine receptions for 143 yards. His nine receptions also tied a program record. He moved into second place on the Eagles' all-time list with 81 receptions and is 27 receiving yards shy of 1,000.

 

Sophomore quarterback Antonio Henton (Fort Valley/Peach County) ranks second in the conference and 37th nationally averaging 225 yards of total offense per game. He is tied for 14th in the nation with a SoCon-best 15.0 points responsible for per game. If Henton throws a touchdown pass against Wofford he would tie a GS record having thrown a TD pass in five consecutive games.

 

Freshman Samair Baker (Valrico, FL/Brandon) ranks 22nd nationally averaging 26 yards per kickoff return. He tied a Georgia Southern single-game, season and career record with his 94-yard return for a TD against Elon.

 

Redshirt-freshman Charlie Edwards (Tifton/Tift County) leads the SoCon and enters the week 13th nationally averaging 42.7 yards per punt.

 

Carson Hill (Milledgeville/Baldwin County) is tied for fifth nationally averaging two pass breakups per game. The junior defensive back is fifth on the squad making 25 tackles.

 

Senior Quentin Taylor (Apopka, FL/Apopka) has recorded double-digit tackles the past two games, most recently 12 against Elon. He is second in the conference and tied for 42nd nationally averaging 9.2 stops per game. Terrione Benefield (Conyers/Heritange) moved into a tie for ninth in the SoCon averaging seven tackles a game.

 

J.B. Shippy (Gaffney, S.C./Gaffney) is tied for fourth in the conference and 88th in the nation with his team-leading two sacks in four games.

 

Wofford (2-1 overall) will open its conference schedule at Paulson Stadium. The Terriers rank second nationally averaging 329 rushing yards per game. Leading that attack is Dane Romero (75.3 ypg), ranked 53rd nationally, and quarterback Ben Widmyer at 64th in the nation (70.3 ypg). Widmyer also ranks 89th nationally in total offense (165.7). Patrick Mugan is tied for eighth in field goals (1.7) and 33rd averaging 8.7 points per game. Seth Goldwire leads the SoCon and is tied for 26th averaging 10 tackles per game.
