Softball, Chattanooga Split

STATESBORO, Ga. --- The Chattanooga softball team erupted for five runs in the seventh inning of game two to salvage a split with Georgia Southern Saturday afternoon at Eagle Field.
GSU took game one 3-1 while UTC won game two 9-4.
The win in the nightcap gives Chattanooga (35-18, 13-4) the Southern Conference title. Georgia Southern (33-28, 12-8) remains in third place with one game to play.
“I'm happy about the first game,” said GSU head coach Natalie Poole. “We pitched well and Robyne (Siliga) definitely was a clutch hitter for us today. She came through with a couple of good hits, continued to hack away and make some good adjustments. We played better defensively in the first game ? in the second game we struggled a little bit. I definitely think we handed the second game over to them.”
Junior Robyne Siliga (Oceanside, Calif.) provided all of GSU's offense in game one with a three-run homer, her ninth of the season. She added another in game two, capping off a four-run rally with yet another three-run bomb.
“Both of them were really clutch,” said Poole. “The fact that we had two of our quicker runners on helped and having someone come in behind them and hit them in was great. I was real proud of her for staying the course with the hitting against each pitcher.”
Senior Melissa Laliberte (Cobourg, Ontario, Canada) held the Lady Mocs to just two hits through six innings. She allowed a single and walked three in the seventh to account for UTC's lone run but escaped without further damage. She improves to 16-11.
“I thought she had a good performance,” said Poole. “She did struggle in the seventh ? she was trying to place some pitches, rather than just throwing them. Otherwise I thought she threw a great game. I thought she commanded the game really well.”
Brooke Loudermilk (13-7) allowed six hits and three earned runs for UTC.
After Siliga and the Eagles rallied with a four-spot in the fifth, Chattanooga answered immediately with a Laci Upchurch home run to tie the game.
The Lady Mocs put the game away with five runs in the seventh, thanks in part to three walks, including two to lead off the inning.
“We just didn't start the inning off right,” said Poole. “We gave up two walks and the next one was a hit which scores one of those walks.”
Toni Hutchison broke the deadlock with a double and after another walk, Upchurch followed with a two-run single.
Kaitlin Holloway (9-2) earned the win in relief while sophomore Kristan Glover (Evans, Ga.) took the loss (3-7).
The series (and regular season) concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.
