School Records Set to Fall in Greensboro Series

STATESBORO, Ga. --- Two Georgia Southern records can be overtaken this weekend when the Eagles travel to UNC Greensboro for a three-game SoCon series.
The set starts with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. UNCG will be providing a live video webcast that can be purchased at www.uncgspartans.com. Free live stats will also be available.
The Eagles (25-22, 5-4) have won three in a row and five of their past six outings, including a sweep of Florida A&M Wednesday. The Spartans (14-22, 1-5) have rebounded from a nine-game losing streak to win five of eight but dropped two of three last weekend at home to Western Carolina.
“We've had some conversations about UNC Greensboro and what to expect from them,” said head coach Natalie Poole, who needs two wins to become the school's all-time winningest coach. “They're going to be a pretty solid defensive team. Pitching-wise I feel like we have better numbers than they do and we've worked on the things we feel like they're going to throw at us. We're going to have to make sure we make adjustments.”
UNCG has just one player hitting over .267: senior Mary Greenway who is hitting .333, seventh in the SoCon, and tops the conference with 34 stolen bases and four triples.
“The key is going to be keeping their speed, their leadoff hitter, off the bases (and) keep her from capitalizing on base hits,” said Poole. “If we can do that then we should be able to limit their hitters and keep away from timely hits.”
The sweep on Wednesday saw sophomore Jenny Side tie the school's single-season home run mark of 10. In just two seasons she currently stands in third all-time at GSU with 19 roundtrippers, four shy of Robyne Siliga's mark of 23, and is the only player in school history to record 10 homer and 10 doubles in the same season.
Side currently has a nine-game hitting streak, second-longest among all GSU players this season (Hopkins-11) and posted seven RBI in the sweep of Florida A&M.
Senior Melissa Laliberte, who has a 0.35 ERA in the first inning this season, has allowed first-inning runs twice in her last three starts. But from the second inning on in those two starts, she has not given up a run.
“Once she got out of the first inning, settled down and regrouped and focused on the things she can control I think she was fine,” said Poole. “The good thing is, she's showing better mental strength as well as recovery when things don't go well than the year we went to regionals. I think she's bringing a better mental game which is helping her become an even better athlete.”
