STATESBORO, Ga. --- The No. 3 seed in the Southern Conference Tournament, Georgia Southern aims for its first NCAA bid in16 years, beginning Saturday with either Charleston or The Citadel.
The Eagles (20-11, 13-7) ended the season with three straight losses ? at Austin Peay, at Charleston and against league-champion Davidson ? matching the team's longest losing streak all season.
“I think we're a little fragile mentally right now,” said head coach Jeff Price. “I knew, looking at the schedule, that our last three games - at Austin Peay, at Charleston and Davidson at home were going to be really tough games. We're starting a new season now, we started practice (Monday) and hopefully our guys understand that.”
GSU faces the winner of Charleston-The Citadel Saturday night at 9:15 p.m. While they swept The Citadel easily, the Eagles split with Charleston in two tight affairs.
“The Citadel has shown they can play with people and shoot the ball,” Price said. “Obviously, Charleston we've had a couple of really good games with. We'll watch the game on Friday and prepare either way.”
Charleston (14-16, 9-11), the No. 6 seed, ended the regular season with two straight wins to finish third in the South Division. A top-heavy team, the Cougars played only eight people in the win over GSU last week and has four players averaging double figures who account for 2/3's of the team's offense.
Leading that group is SoCon All-Freshman Team member Andrew Goudelock, who despite starting just 15 times, led the team in scoring (13.4 ppg) and recorded a team-high 18 points in the last meeting with Georgia Southern.
The Citadel (6-23, 1-19) is one of the youngest teams in the nation with 11 freshmen, a junior and a senior on the roster. The No. 11 seed Bulldogs boast the league's Freshman of the Year, Cameron Wells, who averages 14.6 ppg, fifth-best in the SoCon.
GSU will rely on senior Louis Graham, who was named to the media's All-SoCon First Team Tuesday. While he is third-leading scorer in the conference (16.8 ppg), he is coming off his first scoreless game in over three years.
Willie Powers earned All-Freshman Team honors from the league's media association, becoming the first Georgia Southern player to do so since Graham in 2005.
Graham and Powers helped guide the team to its third 20-win season in the last five years.
“We just need to stress confidence and the fact that we've won 20 games this year,” said Price. “We tied for the second-best record in the whole conference, at one point we won eight out of nine, we've got a lot of seniors and we've got a lot of positive things going for us and let's go over there and play that way.”
