STATESBORO, Ga. --- The Eagles venture away from Statesboro for a rare road game these days to take on Wofford Thursday.
The trip to Wofford breaks up a string of five home games. Following Thursday's clash, the Eagles host Elon and The Citadel.
The first part of this home stretch went just as the Eagles wanted. The team won all three games and finished it off with a resounding 81-61 decision over SoCon North Division-leading Chattanooga.
“We accomplished what we needed to on our home stand,” said head coach Jeff Price. “We wanted to win all three and we won all three. We should be a confident team. We're coming off a great win against Chattanooga - we beat them pretty handily - and you just have to hope you have carryover.”
Georgia Southern (17-8, 10-5) has won three straight and five of six. They held the Mocs to just four points through the first 10 minutes of the second half while running up 26 points of their own. UTC entered the game as the second-highest scoring team in the league and scored their fourth-fewest points of the season.
“Any time you hold a team to six field goals in one half, you're playing well,” Price said. “In the second half they had one field goal in the first 10 minutes. We just communicated well, we were physical, we contested all shots and our pressure was outstanding. We knew going into the game it was a team we could pressure and we ended up forcing 27 turnovers.”
Wofford won six of seven, including a road triumph at Georgia Southern before dropping their last two. The Terriers suffered an 83-55 loss at Appalachian State Monday.
In that win at Hanner, Wofford made up a nine-point deficit at halftime and shot 72.4 percent from the floor for 59 points in the second half.
“We have one home loss this year and that loss is to Wofford, so I certainly don't think we'll take anybody lightly,” said Price. “We've learned from that game hopefully that it's a dangerous basketball team. ... We need to go in with good focus, defend better - we had a poor defensive second half, just a poor second half overall against them - and play a complete game.”
