Men's Basketball Overcomes Sluggish Start, Routs Reinhardt

STATESBORO, Ga. --- After eight-plus minutes of a tight battle with Reinhardt, the Georgia Southern men's basketball team finished the half on a 24-8 run to run their home-opening win streak to 28 in a 96-61 win Friday night at Hanner Fieldhouse.
The Eagles improve to 2-1 on the season while Reinhardt is 1-2.
“It's always good to win the game but there were lots of things that I wasn't pleased with,” said GSU head coach Jeff Price. “We gave up way too many offensive rebounds and we put them on the free throw line too much. And we need to get a handle on that or it could end up being a long year for us.”
GSU also extends their non-conference home winning streak to 25, a run that dates back to 2002.
The Eagles received a career-high 19 points from Antonio Hanson (Fort Worth, Texas), who shot 7-for-9 from the field and 5-for-6 from 3-point territory.
“He's a tremendous shooter but we've got to get him to do other things,” said Price. “He's got to become more of a complete player. He can really shoot but we got to get him doing some other things better.”
Four other players recorded double-figure points, including junior Tyler Troupe (Gallatin, Tenn.) with 15, freshman Ben Drayton III (St. Mary's, Ga.) with a career-high 12, and seniors Julian Allen (Waterbury, Conn.) and Trumaine Pearson (Stuart, Fla.) with 11 and 10, respectively.
Drayton converted four of his six shots and his only 3-point attempt. He dished out four assists in 22 minutes.
“Ben played really well, he came in as a freshmen, I thought he was our best push with the ball in transition and was very aggressive,” Price said. “He played with a lot of confidence.”
Troupe also recorded a double-double with 12 rebounds.
Georgia Southern shot 65.4% (17-26) from the floor in the opening half and 59.3% for the game.
Reinhardt hung in there with Georgia Southern, taking a couple of leads early on and trailing by just two, 20-18, with 11:36 to play in the first half. But GSU scored the next five points and reeled off a 12-2 run. The Eagles finished the half on a 12-2 spurt to lead 44-26 at the break.
By the end of the game Georgia Southern had five of their six new players on the floor at the same time.
“I tried as much as I could to play the new guys a lot to get them used to our system and what we want to do -- That was by design,” Price said.
Georgia Southern returns to action Tuesday with a game at UTEP. Tip off is scheduled for 9:05 Eastern time.
