STATESBORO, Ga. --- Georgia Southern’s season opener Nov. 10 is approaching quickly said head men’s basketball coach Jeff Price.
The Eagles, who take on Houston in Durham, N.C., are progressing according to Price’s timeline.
“Unfortunately we have a game soon and obviously this time of year I don’t think it’s just us ? I don’t think anybody can be ready to be at the top of their game, but I think we’re learning at the right pace.
“Our new guys are starting to get a better feel for how we play and what we’re doing and I think that’s going to be an on-going process throughout the whole season because we have six new players.”
The Eagles play their second preseason scrimmage on Sunday against Stetson. Price and his staff will be looking at both team and individual performances.
“When you have this many new players, you not only look at how you’re doing as a team but we’re still looking at individuals to see how they respond to game situations. So we’re not only looking at how we are as a team, both offensively and defensively, we’re looking at individuals and how much they’re going to be able to play.”
SMALL WONDERS
The small forward or “3” position on the floor is led by two seniors: Julian Allen and Anthony Marshall. Allen, in his first season in a Georgia Southern uniform last year, started 31 times and averaged 7.8 points and 4.7 rebounds and shot a team-best 77% from the free throw line. Marshall came off the bench for all but one game but still finished fifth on the team in scoring at 8.1 per game and hit 38 3-pointers. He has elected to use his fifth year of eligibility.
“We’re deep at that position with Julian Allen, Anthony Marshall and Colby Wohlleb. That’s not to say that we wouldn’t play two of them at the same time, but as far as the big guards go, those are our three guys.”
Wohlleb, who stands 6-6, should give GSU a height advantage against most teams.
“It’s our most experienced position and it’s our deepest position. I don’t think we have to worry a lot about that spot and getting production from that position.”
